Griffin Award Honors Rehabilitation of Cumberland Avenue Home

The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County presented the highly prized Griffin Award to Barbara Benisch and Jacque Allen, owners of 156 Cumberland Avenue, at a ceremony held in the Asheville Masonic Temple on May 18.

The society recognized Barbara and Jacque for the residential rehabilitation of their historic home. Also honored were the architect of the project, Jane Mathews of Mathews Architecture, and contractor Lee Harwell.

Since 1979, the society has awarded the Griffin for the “protection and preservation . . . of our most visible and beautiful historic buildings.” Over the years, a number residents of Montford have received the recognition.
