State could woo residents with less noise, greenway
By Joel Burgess • March 14, 2010
ASHEVILLE — Plans for a new interstate route through Asheville have changed again, gaining praise from planning activists but only cautious approval from residents worried about noise.
State engineers now say they have narrowed the alternatives for a new Interstate 26 route over the French Broad River from four to three.
Engineers also have adjusted one alternative popular with an architects’ group following noise concerns from west Montford residents. The state plans to select a route in late summer or early fall.
Montford residents living on Westover Drive, Sylvan Avenue and other western parts of the historic neighborhood gave a mixed reaction to the changes.
