Planning a No-Plastic Earth Day

Mitch Russell

Thought that since Earth Day is next month on April 22, I would get you thinking about simple acts that are good for the environment. Earth Day can be a day for dedicating ourselves to doing something for our planet. Some of us do this year-round, many seasonally, and others on Earth Day or another symbolic day.

As you may have guessed, I try to be a year-rounder, but I still like to do something extra for Earth Day.

This year I’m vowing not to buy anything prepackaged in plastic or bagged in plastic grocery bags. The reason is that I don’t want oil and natural gas to be such an intimate part of my life. Say what? Well, according to the American Chemistry Council, oil and natural gas are the major raw materials used to manufacture plastics.

Refusing plastic grocery bags will be easy since I usually take my own reusable bags with me to the store or ask for no bag if just buying an item or two. I also stash a few paper bags in my car as backups if I forget my reusables.

More difficult this time of year will be finding fresh veggies not packaged in plastic, but hopefully by Earth Day our amazing tailgate markets will be open, and I can achieve my goal of a no-plastic Earth Day.

Wish me luck, and Happy Spring!
